Wii Channel Breakdown
Details on the Wii user interface.
by Anoop Gantayat

September 14, 2006 - So what do you see when you turn on your Wii? The answer is Wii Channel, a browsing screen that gives you a full view of games and content accessible from your system.

Wii Channel was created with the idea of "expanding the number of television channels" available to users. In all, your Wii can have a total of 48 channels. By increasing the software stored within the system, you get access to new channels, all selectable from a main selection screen.
The main Wii Channel screen

An example of a channel is the Disk Drive Channel, which shows what's currently in the Wii disk drive, be it a Wii game or a GameCube game. You'll also find a picture channel, which gives you access to the pictures located on your system, and a news channel, which uses the internet to access the latest news. To purchase Virtual Console titles, you access the Wii Shopping Channel.

Disk Drive Channel
Go here to start up Wii and GameCube games.

Picture Channel
Access the pictures that are stored away on your SD Memory Card. The Wiimote is used to shrink and enarge pictures. You also have access to image modification tools including paint brushes and paint buckets, and can view your images as a slide show.

Internet Channel
Go here to access the Opera internet browser. In addition to supporting flash (making this a step up from the DS browser), the browser uses the Wiimote to zoom in and out. The browser will normally cost money, but Nintendo will make it available for free download until June of 2006.

Weather Channel
This free weather service requires an internet connection. In addition to daily weather based on region, you also have access to a weekly forecast.

News Channel
The latest news is automatically updated and viewable through this channel, which also requires an internet connection. The new channel is said to have "functions indicative of a game machine."

Avatar Channel
In this channel, you create your own avatar, which is referred to as a "Mii." Your Mii is used in Wii games and can be transferred to your Wiimote and used on other Wii consoles.

You'll also find channels for launching Virtual Console aps on the Famicom, Super Famicom and Nintendo 64. The interface also seems to allow players to assign shortcuts to Virtual Console titles, although specifics on how Nintendo will be organizing all the games players will potentially have stored on their SD cards are not known.

In addition to the individual channels, the Wii Channel interface gives you access to a message board, used for exchanging messages with your family members. Nintendo considers this similar to posting a memo on a refrigerator. In addition to writing text, you can also include images from your SD card in the body of messages. The message board service also gives access to the internet via WiConnect24, allowing those with whom you've exchanged friend codes to see your memos.

You might even see memos created by games like Animal Crossing...

Just updated the software of the forum to the newest version. As you may have probably noticed already, there are some features that are missing. I'm currently working on it to fix everything.

Also, people can now registering automatically without having to wait untill his/her account is activated, thanks to the CAPTCHA system, which doesn't lets bots register.

Forum Announcements / Figurines now available at shop!
« on: August 15, 2006, 05:40:06 PM »
Well.. since members that weren't participating in the RP found the shop useless, I'm now adding figurines. This are like the trophies from Smash Bros Melee, and will contain data from characters that have appeared in Nintendo consoles. Some figurines will also give bonus to RP users, and others will give extra options to use in the forum. They will be released in sets of 7.

Also, the shop has recieved an upgrade. The bank is back (although, I don't think the interests function will work), so you don't have to carry all of your gold around. Also, you can now send items to other people without using the Trade Center.

Just asking for opinion, but, does the Info Center (in the bottom of the index), looks big, with the new information it includes (about visitors during the day)?

Can I be staff/moderator?
No. Asking to be part of the staff or a mod will only decrease your chances of becoming one.

Mario / Man Plays Super Mario Bros. For First Time Ever
« on: July 02, 2006, 04:03:24 PM »
Some Kotaku dude posted a link to this YouTube video of Japanese comedian Shigenori Yamashita playing Super Mario Bros. for the very first time ever. Aside from the total hilarity, it's actually a very interesting case study on how even games lauded as being the most played and the most accessible ever are still just... a little confusing to the average Joe Sixpack.

Pokémon / Impressions about 1st Pokémon Battle Revolution vid
« on: June 08, 2006, 02:09:10 PM »
So.. what do you think about Pokemon Battle Rev, after seeing the first video.

IMO, it looks much more superior than the pokemon games from Gamecube. The trainers now actually moved and made expressions, compared to Colloseum or XD. Also, I'm impressed that this game could actually be another launch title.

As in the previous forum, but now including pictures! (if you want :P)

Here's my list of games I own.

General Discussion / Online translators, which one is better?
« on: May 25, 2006, 10:03:30 PM »
Ok, let's start this discussion... which one do you think is the best online web translator?

Here's a demostration of the one from Google working, and I can't make an example of the one for Altavista, since there is no exact URLs for translations from them. So for comparing you need to go to here and translate this URL from Japanese to English: .
